The Basics of License Plate Registration
The first step in license plate registration is to select the type of plate you’d like to have. There are several types, including motorcycle, dual-purpose farm, and farm truck. You can also choose to renew your license plates each year. Once you’ve chosen your type, you need to pay the registration fee and choose a renewal date.
You may not be familiar with these types, but they have some common characteristics. A series with an alternating pattern of numbers can be confusing. This style was intended to avoid confusing letters like O and I. In addition, it was the last standard format used for passenger plates. In 1991, a security mark appeared on the front and rear of the plate.
The letter series on the original run of orange plates was determined by county. The letters were chosen based on features and geographical names of counties. The county designations were issued in alphabetical order. In the same way, letters were assigned to vehicles. The first letter of a registration number corresponds to the vehicle’s model year, while the second letter is assigned to the vehicle’s registration number.
Some states don’t have a coding system, but some do. While some states encode the county into a serial number, New York chose to use this method from 1946 through 1986. There are two systems of county coding: the old-style R-12345 format had the county name at the left and the political subdivision at the bottom. The last series, SL-series, was used between 1991 and 2010. The newer format was also used for standby vehicles. While the new format is more modern and convenient, the old-style style remains valid.
Although the official system of license plate registration dates back to 1903, the practice has a long history. Some cities have adopted similar systems that go back to the early nineteenth century. However, drivers were not required to display these plates until 1921. But in other areas, the system was introduced earlier than anywhere else.
Some states issue special license plates for businesses. These license plates are not attached to any specific vehicle, which is beneficial if you have a large fleet. Alternatively, you can purchase a plate for a particular cause or organization. However, these types of plates may require special record keeping. They aren’t a necessity, so consider your options before making a purchase.
The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles’ website contains a list of specialty license plates. It also lists annual use fees, recipient organizations, and the organizations that fund these plates. Applicants for special plates can pay a $5 processing fee. Once your application has been reviewed, a Tax Collector Agent will contact you within three days to collect your license plate registration fee. If you’re a military veteran or a Purple Heart recipient, you can also apply for a special plate for your vehicle.
